First, the important difference
Side and rear glass is not made like your windshield
Your windshield is laminated — two layers of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer. Crack it and it stays in one piece. That is why a chip in a windshield can be repaired at all.
Door glass, quarter glass and back glass are tempered. Tempered glass is heat-treated so that when it fails it fails completely, breaking into thousands of small blunt cubes rather than long blades. It is a safety feature, and it is why there is no such thing as repairing a side window. Once it goes, it is gone.
It also means the job is half glass fitting and half cleanup.
What we replace
Every piece of glass on the car except the windshield
- Door glass. Front and rear, the window that rolls down. The most common break-in casualty by a wide margin.
- Back glass. The rear window, usually with a defroster grid and often a radio antenna printed into it.
- Quarter glass. The small fixed pane behind the rear door on many sedans and SUVs.
- Vent glass. The little triangular pane at the front of the door frame.
- Sliding rear window. Pickups — fixed, manual slider or power.
- Window regulators and motors. Sometimes the glass is fine and the mechanism that lifts it is not.
- Vehicle-specific fixed panels. Vans, work trucks, older models. Tell us what it is and we will source it.
- Weatherstrip and run channels. The rubber the glass runs in. Perished ones cause noise and leaks.
The part that separates shops
Fitting the glass is the quick bit. The cleanup is the job.
When a door window shatters, most of the glass does not land on your seat. It falls down inside the door cavity, into the bottom of the door where the drain holes are, into the seat rails, into the seat belt reel channel and under the carpet.
Leave it there and you get rattles for the life of the car, blocked door drains that turn into a wet carpet, and a handful of fragments that turn up in a child’s seat six months later.
We take the door trim panel off and vacuum the cavity out. It adds time to the job. It is also the difference between a window replacement and a window replacement you regret.

Smashed door glass is the job we push hardest to fit in the same day, because an open car is not something anyone should have to leave on the street overnight.
If we genuinely cannot get to you until the next day, we will say so plainly so you can make other arrangements rather than sitting waiting on us.
A few practical things while you wait: photograph the damage before you clean anything up if you are filing a claim or a police report, do not run the window switch (the regulator may be carrying loose glass), and park somewhere lit if you can.

Can a cracked side window be repaired instead of replaced?
No. Side and rear windows are tempered glass, which does not crack — it shatters completely. There is nothing left to inject resin into. Repair is only ever an option on a laminated windshield.

Do you clean up all the broken glass?
Yes, and this is the part we take seriously. We pull the door trim panel and vacuum out the cavity, the drain holes, the seat rails and the belt channel — not just the visible pieces on the seat and carpet.
Tempered glass fragments that get left inside a door will rattle for years and can block the drains, which is how a broken window turns into a wet carpet.
Does the defroster on my back glass still work afterwards?
It should, because the grid is printed into the replacement glass and we reconnect it and test it before we leave. Same for a radio antenna printed into the glass.
If your defroster was already patchy before the break, tell us — that is a separate problem and worth knowing about in advance.
How long does a door window take?
Usually under an hour on a common vehicle, including pulling the trim panel and doing the cleanup properly. Back glass can take longer because of the defroster and antenna connections.
Will my insurance cover a break-in?
Broken glass from a break-in is normally a comprehensive claim, subject to your deductible. Whether it is worth claiming depends on how the deductible compares to the cost of one window.
Photograph the damage before anything gets cleaned up, and check whether your carrier wants a police report number.
Can you fix a window that will not roll up?
Often, yes. If the glass is intact and the problem is the regulator or the motor, that is a mechanism job rather than a glass job — tell us what it is doing when you call and we will bring what we are likely to need.
