Windshield replacement, done where the car is parked
A windshield is a structural part of your vehicle and, on most modern cars, a mount for the camera that runs your safety systems. Fitting it properly matters more than where the glass came from.

Why the install matters more than the glass
Your windshield holds the roof up
In a front-end collision the windshield is what the passenger airbag pushes against as it inflates. In a rollover it contributes a significant share of the roof’s crush strength. It is bonded to the body with structural urethane, and the bond is only as good as the surface it was laid on.
Which is why the parts of this job you never see — how far the old urethane was cut back, whether the pinch weld was primed, whether rust was treated or painted over — matter more than the brand on the glass.
- We cut back to a thin, even bedNot down to bare metal, not left thick and lumpy. A consistent base is what a consistent bond needs.
- Rust gets treated, not buriedBond urethane over rust and the rust keeps going underneath. If we find it, we tell you before we go further.
- One continuous beadA break in the bead is where a leak or a wind whistle comes from six months later.
- You get a real drive-away timeBased on the urethane we used and the weather that day — not a number we made up to get you off the phone.
Getting the right part
Two identical-looking cars can take two different windshields
Year, make and model narrows it down. These options decide it — which is why we ask, and why a shop that quotes you in ten seconds without asking any of this is guessing.
- Rain sensor. Needs a matching gel pad and bracket bonded to the glass.
- Forward-facing camera. Lane keeping, adaptive cruise, emergency braking. Changes the bracket and usually means recalibration.
- Heated wiper park. A heating element in the bottom strip of the glass.
- Acoustic interlayer. A sound-damping laminate. Fit standard glass instead and the cabin gets noticeably louder.
- Head-up display. A special wedge-shaped interlayer. Wrong glass, ghosted double image.
- Solar or infrared coating. Tinted band, heat rejection, sometimes a phone-signal window in the coating.
- Humidity or light sensors. More brackets, more mounting positions.
- Antenna in the glass. Common on vehicles with no external mast.
Look in the bottom corner of your current windshield. The markings there — a DOT number, an AS1 designation, the manufacturer — tell us a lot. Photograph that corner along with the damage and you have given us most of what we need.

If there is a camera behind your mirror, it needs recalibrating
Replacing the glass moves the camera. Even a fraction of a degree of change in its aim shifts where the car thinks the lane lines are, and how far away it thinks the vehicle in front is.
Static calibration uses a target board set at a measured distance on level ground. Dynamic calibration is driven on the road at a set speed with a scan tool connected. Your vehicle may need one, the other, or both in sequence.
Ask us when you call. We will tell you whether your specific vehicle needs it and what it adds — before you book, not after we have the old glass out.
- Lane departure warning / lane keepingReads lane markings through the glass.
- Adaptive cruise controlJudges distance and closing speed ahead.
- Automatic emergency brakingThe system most worth getting right.
- Traffic sign recognitionSame camera, same aim.
- Rain-sensing wipersNeeds its gel pad seated correctly against new glass.
Pricing
What moves the number
We will not put a price list on a website, because a windshield for a 2012 Civic and one for a 2023 truck with a camera and a HUD are not the same job. Here is what we are weighing when we quote you.
- The glass itself
- Common vehicles have several suppliers competing and the glass is inexpensive. European models, HUD windshields, and anything recent enough to still be low-volume cost more and sometimes have to be ordered in.
- OEM, OEE or aftermarket
- All three meet the same federal safety standard — that is what the DOT and AS1 markings certify. The differences are fit tolerance, optical clarity and price. On a vehicle with a camera or a head-up display looking through the glass, the tighter tolerance is worth paying for. On a fifteen-year-old commuter it usually is not. We quote what makes sense and explain why.
- ADAS recalibration
- A real, separate line item where your vehicle needs it. We would rather show it to you up front than fold it in and have you think the glass costs more than it does.
- Mouldings and clips
- Some vehicles use a one-time-use moulding that has to be replaced with the glass. Cheap, but real, and we would rather fit a new one than reuse a stretched one.
- Rust at the pinch weld
- Uncommon on the Central Coast but it happens, particularly on older vehicles near the water. If we find it, we stop and talk to you before continuing.
- Insurance
- If you are claiming, your deductible usually decides what you actually pay. Tell us your carrier when you call.
Questions
About this job, specifically
How long does the whole job take?
Sixty to ninety minutes on most vehicles, from us pulling up to us packing away. Cutting the old urethane out and preparing the pinch weld is the slow part.
If your vehicle needs an ADAS recalibration, allow more — a static calibration needs level ground and space in front of the car, and a dynamic one means a road drive.
How long before I can drive it?
We will give you the exact minimum before we leave, because it depends on the specific urethane and the temperature that day. On a warm Salinas afternoon, plan on around an hour. Cold or damp weather makes it longer.
Two things for the first day: leave a window cracked open about an inch so closing a door does not pressurise the cabin against the fresh seal, and skip the high-pressure car wash for a couple of days.
Do you use OEM glass?
We can. We will also tell you honestly when it is not worth the difference on your vehicle. Quality aftermarket glass is built to the same federal standard — the AS1 marking in the corner is that standard.
Where original equipment glass genuinely earns its money is on vehicles with a camera or head-up display looking through it, where fit tolerance and optical clarity matter more. Ask us for both numbers and decide for yourself.
Will my new windshield leak?
Not if it is installed properly. Leaks and wind noise almost always trace back to a broken or uneven urethane bead, contamination on the bonding surface, or a moulding that was reused when it should not have been.
If yours does leak, call us and we will come back out and sort it.
Can you do it at my work?
Yes, and a lot of our replacements happen exactly that way. We need a parking space with room to open both front doors, ideally out of direct heavy rain, and your keys or an unlocked car.
You do not have to stand there. We will call you when it is done and tell you the drive-away time then.
What if it is raining?
Urethane does not cure correctly when it is wet, and moisture on the bonding surface is exactly how you get a leak later. If there is a carport, a garage or an overhang we will use it. If not, we would rather move you to the next dry slot than do the job badly and come back to fix it.
Does insurance cover a full replacement?
Usually under comprehensive, subject to your deductible. Whether it makes sense to claim depends on how your deductible compares to the cost of the job — sometimes it does not, and we will say so.
Whether a claim affects your premium is between you and your carrier. Any shop that promises it will not is telling you something they cannot know.
